Long Overdue

Life has been, to say the least, busy.  It has in truth been a whirlwind, or so it would seem, the last two months.  I continue to be behind on everything from armour prep for Gulf Wars in just over two weeks to never seeming to get a blog written at all.  Some quickly noted observations though continuing with that new category that seems to lend itself to such things fairly easily while I finish enjoying the last cup of coffee before heading out to some family obligations that I have this afternoon.

BASIC

For any computer programmers and even a large number of almost computer programmers we all know that BASIC is an acronym for Beginners All-Purpose Symbolic Instructional Code.   And while my focus is not on BASIC itself today, let me ad that for a long time I used Advanced BASIC (a seemingly oxymoron in itself) at the office back in my days at IBM and Lexmark – which used basica for the command line launch of the compile and link.  To this day, after typing b-a-s-i-c-a-<space>-something else a few hundred thousand times, in regular typing it almost occurs automagically and I can type “… it was a basic thought.” and I will get “…it was a basica thought.“  All that aside, I thought a primer on some commonly used abbreviations and acronyms was in order.

Observations 2010

Starting out the new year right.  My goal off the top of the bat is to post daily for the month of January.  That being said, my biggest first observation of the year is just how much of a cluster the holiday season between and around Christmas and New Years plays on blog readership.  I went from pushing close to two hundred daily readers in the first half of December to barely getting twenty some days in between the holidays.  Guess that says what most of you are doing at work, eh?  Just kidding.   In all seriousness I did not post as much during the that time either, but I am back on a roll now and so without further ado, some of the first of my observations for 2010!

Odd Bits…

Some historical irony in this weeks list of observations that I just find wonderfully fulfilling in a geeky kind of way.  Also a good enough story that strikes home to some posts I have had here before about the idea and also the fact that you do not necessarily need an electronic can opening device built into your laptop.  Hopefully, I have done a better job with my note taking as I have observed things this week, as I putting it together on the fly when most things are actually observed.

Smart Phone

androidI guess it should come as no surprise to anyone that I am thinking again about a smart phone.  I know, I know… I looked so hard right around Christmas and on up through spring at getting an I-Phone that you guys are sick of hearing about it.  Especially when considering that I ended up not purchasing one at all and instead with with a last years generation or slightly older web enabled (barely), qwerty keyboard style of phone instead.  Do recall though that things with my plan to take over the world… er forget that part.  Plans changed due to things beyond my control.

eMusic Trial Offer

eMusicI will begin with I probably knew better from the get go, but I was lured in all the same.  After all when I read the message of a fourteen day free trial with no obligations and thirty six credits it sounded pretty good.  I was, after all, in the market for a few songs here and there that I was wanting to get, just the single song, without purchase of an album of what have you.  Besides the small print clearly stated, no charge would be made so long as the account was canceled during the fourteen day trial period.

GPS vs Smartphones

SextantAnyone asking for GPS for Christmas this year? If you are I would ask you think twice about it and probably check it off your list. Consider this for just a second, most smart phones and even more then a few phones from the generation before, have a built in GPS navigation system of some sort of another. Take it a step further when you consider the GPS is a basically a single (or perhaps double) function device for at least $100 if not closer to $150 or more.

Observations

Did They Tip?I have a few notes about various things on which I want to comment.  Very few of them actually merit their on full blown blog entry, so I am going to put them here in a group.   They are a few things from headlines, news, links, and just general things – and almost none of them belong together in fashion.  I am thinking about making this some of regular feature here on mephistos, as I often have such little one or two line things that I would like to at least share the link about and give my two cents of opinion about the subject.  Read through this one and let me know if you think it is a good idea or not – and for the record, I will assume no comment to be a silent affirmative.

…a decent proposal…

a decent proposalOr… what I did a few nights ago that had not been made public that was so interesting.  I love the idea that is presented and thought it would be a fun thing to give a grand effort toward.   I mean after all, this woman is clearly attractive, very active, passionate about a fair number of things.  Beyond those qualities is the fact that she is a world traveler, apparently owns homes in New York City and Lake Tahoe, and is in general seems to be a very positive person.  So, at this point, I am finding myself mildly feeling the sting of rejections, as I proposed my proposal several days ago and have, as of yet, not received a response.

One Way Into a Locked Truck!Today has been about as filled with ups and downs as I have had in a long time.  It technically started at what most of you would call late last night, but I will officially go with it being today.  I have have near disasters followed by some very uplifting experiences.  Given that I thought I would share some highlights of my Sunday with you all.  I may use some of these to expand into a more full blog later this week, but not sure at this point if I will or not.
