Baseball Observations

Given that my Reds are now eight games up and mathematically almost a lock, I had to give a few comments – especially after football yesterday. As I said yesterday, in most other sports I am a casual fan at best, never picking that one team to be a die-hard fan of and follow them through thick and thin. The Cincinnati Reds and UK basketball being the exceptions. Both are teams that had a great deal of success in the mid and late 1970′s, which of course corresponds with I started to be interested in actually watching and certainly understanding the games.
As summer winds down and I am keeping my eye on America’s pastime of baseball, and especially the surprising Cincinnati Reds, I am also turning my attention to fall and football. I thought it would be a good time to make a few notes of what I think will likely happen with the football season, since I do love to watch football, though I admit I have always been a baseball fan and always will be at heart – that is another story though. It does however explain while I only casually root for a football team as opposed to be a lifelong devotee of the Reds. On to football…
I have not put together one of these observation style blogs in a while. Had a couple of things that just screamed a short mention to me a little bit ago and so here are a few of them. I am all over the board with this list of observations, so without a theme I am going to hit dates in your blogs to have the tea-party been hi-jacked, and what is a libertarian? Hopefully all the varied topics will make for a good read. Addendum: After writing, most of this went in a political direction – enjoy!
While at the grocery last night, I made the suggestion to my better half that we get cream cheese in a box versus that in the container and save a little bit in the process by simply using our own container when we get home. The idea carries over to a few other grocery items. While I will fully admit none of them are going to amount to huge savings individually, if you add all of them up together it can result in some fairly significant savings, especially over a years time. And in this current economy, who could not use that?
As has been noted elsewhere I went to NYC several weeks ago with my in-laws for a vacation. While there several small lessons were learned or reinforced for me. This particular one had to do with my general dislike for Wal-Mart and especially the low end products that seem to dominate the shelves through out so much of the store. I am not completely sure why this lesson seems to slip away from me so often, but here it is re-inforced.
