Non-Commercial Christmas

Handmade QuiltI have been a little bit irked about somethings pointing to the Christmas Holiday already.  It makes me kind of sad that I am getting irked as Christmas is up there in regards to my favorite holidays and certainly I appreciate the thought of giving is wonderful.  What is getting me though is the commercialism of it all.  It used to be when I was kid you did not see Christmas stuff until at least the day after Thanksgiving, at least I remember it that way.  Now a days though, the day after All Hallows Eve the Christmas stuff starts going up in the big (and little) ‘box’ stores.  Christmas advertising, especially why you should by this or that or shop here and there for you loved ones is going into overdrive.  It is enough to make one forget about what it is all about and just be sick. Electric FenceSome quick updates since I have been away from the blog for a few days.  Lots of stuff going on in my life right now and I have purposefully put the blog aside for the past few days.  So a few quick things just to get them out there and get a post.  Speaking of posts, that is something to note.  If I don’t post the traffic flow to the website crawls to a sluggish almost stop.  I thought you dear readers hung on every word I had to say and checked in regularly just to make sure I had not said anything.  Guess I am wrong on that one. Amos Lee Live

Posted in: Life, Music | Posted by: rcornish | Comments: 0 | Date: 09 November, 2008

Amos LeeOn Wednesday of this past week as was promised I attended a live performance of Amos Lee.  A few background details.  The venue was the Madison Theater in downtown Covington, Kentucky.  It is a older theater with a huge well lit marquee.  The interior includes a huge bar on both sides as you enter, which was nice for such shows as Amos Lee.  The setup was tables that set four and six in tiers to the floor level, which was nicely open in front of the stage.  I have heard from a friend in the area that it is normally a smoke filled venue - however I heard enough of a conversation with the door keepers to realize that Amos had somehow arranged for the venue to be smoke free during his performance. Seven Year Love

RachelA few mornings back as I made a bleary eyed drive home for a brief stop over I stumbled on a preacher in the early AM hours who was just starting his message about Jacob and his waiting not once, but two times through seven years of service to her father to eventually have Rachel’s hand in marriage.  What a love that must have been to have had that kind of patience and determination.  Can you imagine anyone doing that today? NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMoQuick update on my efforts with NaNoWriMo, especially given what it seems to be showing as a status on over there to the right and down just a little bit here on the mephistos blog.  I did kick off with some major kick butt writing on Saturday afternoon.  I was not feeling well from the head cold that I have had, but spent some major effort in into things.  Between huge coffee consumption, taking some pills, and drinking that icky thera-flu stuff, I managed to write  a blog or two, put together some additional notes about the novel and keyed in 2019 words.   I was very pleased with that amount of wordage for my starting point, especially given that I was not feeling the greatest during the time. A Rose by any Other Name…

RoseSeveral weeks ago I had the opportunity to hear a young lady perform who has the most wonderful voice.  She is also a rather petite small figured (that is redundant, but it is really almost required to give you the full image of her size) young lady.  She performs solo for the most and with minimum to none in the way of accompaniment.  Somewhere here in the blog I mentioned at least one performance that I saw and I liked her so much, I followed up with a second one and purchase of a CD. White HorseI have kind of been thinking the last few blogs have almost been like me writing as auto bot with out really letting myself get into the writing so much.  Anyway, as I am often prone to do, I thought I would just put a blog out that just basically said what is going on with me and my life.  Some of you may recognize the title of the blog and if so, great for you!  So, I am thinking  a list here, but let me see how it works and I will reserve the right to change it later. Marriage Issue

Wedding RingsGay marriage and equal rights for those so aligned - not something that you have heard much of this election cycle, which is kind of surprising considering the hot button issue that it had been back the last two presidential elections. I have only heard mention of it in passing this cycle and really not from any of the candidates themselves. I guess I heard it mentioned on the radio in passing the other idea, specifically some folks saying that it was not such a big issue to them compared to other things this time around and of course the counter view by some who are pushing for it that it is a major issue. Dame Busters

Formerly - The Dame & BustersI admit I am using a play on words in the title.  Many is the eve that I am spent in the two places.  Ad to that the restaurant that is now in its 2nd or 3rd iteration that used to be a drug store across the corner and Irish Pub down the street named McCarthy’s and you pretty much have my social scene for a large part of my college years, some what during after college and especially after the divorce so many years ago.  And to just show how things are cyclical in nature, where did I start hanging out again after things went crazy back in 2007?  Gosh, that really seems like it was longer ago then that now. Not a Mall Type

Posted in: Frustrations, Life | Posted by: rcornish | Comments: 0 | Date: 26 October, 2008

MallThis goes back to a note I wrote myself, that originally said, “Recall the trip to the mall a few weeks ago?  Yea, you love the awesomeness of a few of the new fashions, but ugh, the expense of it all.  And add to that all the people and all the little shops and such and I am just done with it.”  That is all 100% true.   I do like to occasionally indulge the false sense of fashion that I have go check out things at the mall.  I, however would never like to pay mall prices for things as a general rule.   And even that checking out what is fashionable or is looking good is getting to be something that I engage in less and less often.  Given that the last 10 years, I have only on about five occasions really picked out something myself that was fashionable it makes sense, compared to 20 years ago when I was all about trying to be fashionable.
