AFB & Proposition 2

Confined Laying HensI get updates in email newsletter form from the Kentucky Farm Bereau on occasion that are usually concerning with information of current commodity trends and occasionally has a bit information in regards to is happening with farming in the state.  The most recent started with a blurb talking about the American Farm Bereau was disapointed that California had passed the proposition 2 in the recent election.  The note suggested that the voters of the state really did not understand the nature of modern farming and the measure was going to have severe changes on agriculture in the state.  It went so far as to suggest that livestock functions in the state would begin to disappear and that it would likely move overseas. Anne MacFie

Harvest of DulcimersAnne MacFie, who I know as half of Dick and Anne Albin.  She was just Lexington doing music for some cause that was supporting books that have been banned.  She, along with Dick (and my ex-wife who actually introduced me to them), probably opened my eyes to music more then anyone before or after - and for that I give a heart felt thanks.  I am sad, that I was reminded of thme by seeing a flier for the event the week after it had occurred. A Rose by any Other Name…

RoseSeveral weeks ago I had the opportunity to hear a young lady perform who has the most wonderful voice.  She is also a rather petite small figured (that is redundant, but it is really almost required to give you the full image of her size) young lady.  She performs solo for the most and with minimum to none in the way of accompaniment.  Somewhere here in the blog I mentioned at least one performance that I saw and I liked her so much, I followed up with a second one and purchase of a CD. White HorseI have kind of been thinking the last few blogs have almost been like me writing as auto bot with out really letting myself get into the writing so much.  Anyway, as I am often prone to do, I thought I would just put a blog out that just basically said what is going on with me and my life.  Some of you may recognize the title of the blog and if so, great for you!  So, I am thinking  a list here, but let me see how it works and I will reserve the right to change it later. Mongol

MongolThis movie is coming out on HBO (and recently was released on DVD) this month and once again I am running this far behind in giving a review of it.  I actually caught this at the theater in probably its last week at the cheap cinema back during the summer sometime.   The movie itself it definitely not for everyone.  First is the fact that is a historical biographical film that is slightly over two hours long.  Ad to that, it was done by a foreign film crew by director Sergei Bodrov, who is Russian.  And lastly consider that the entire movie is filmed using a mixture language, mostly Mongolian, and subtitled. Old Alumnus

Old MorrisonDespite not feeling so great early today, I went to do this alumni networking event at my old university, Transylvania,  this eve.  In theory, I went mostly to met up and see what alumni were active here in the Lexington area as well as actually do some networking.  It was also a nice opportunity to see the inside of some of campus halls that I had not seen in at least fifteen years.  The event was designed for that but also for us to give some insight to the incoming freshmen class as to what they could expect in the real world in regards to particular majors.   In theory it could also be a networking opportunity for upper class-men to met people who are out in the world, but the only ones I noted in attendance that were not the poor required freshman in University Studies 101 were those students that had, ahem, volunteered to assist their respective major.

As I arrived on campus I immediately went back to between 16 and 20 years Read more…

Blind Liquor Corn Pickers

Blind Corn Liquor Pickers - Appalachian TrailI have to say, this group is amongst the tops of the musical discoveries I have made this summer.  Beyond that is the touching story that can be found below with the link.  You may not be able to tell by the name of the group, but they are what started as a local party band with an unusual twist for party bands, they all like bluegrass music.  Yes, there are obviously some influences there from Celtic music, which saying that seems odd, as I am sure Jean Ritchie and others have said that bluegrass and mountain music can clearly trace back to Celtic origins.  There is also the occasional smattering of blues, especially when Beth, whom I affectionately tell everyone is Mama Cass, is doing vocals. You, Me & Amos Lee

Open RoadOkay, I admit that it sounds like it could be bad spin-off movie title.  Or even better, that Amos Lee could be a Jerry Clower or Mayberry character from the past.  The fact is though that Amos Lee is an awesome musician that I have recently been introduced to, aside from being singer-songwriter by nature, Amos has inspired a few things for me and my hats go of to the person that introduced me to him.  Some additional information about his music, specifically the Supply and Demand Cd can be found by clicking.

Tech Notes

TechnologyOne of my things (and indeed really a part of the job as well) is keeping up with technology. I am of course usually much more interested in technology as it effects the larger scale of things, especially as it applies to business and such. One thing I am noticing though is that there is becoming a change in the way things work - instead of the business and then to the consumer, technology is going from the consumer to the business. It is kind of an odd thing for me. I love technology, yet I am rarely a first adopter of new technologies that are mass consumer market oriented. For instance, first regular use of a cell phone for me - within the last three years. Realization that the “internet” was not all text based information via telnet and FTP - 1997.

Anyway, that being said I have a pretty good pulse on things these days. Having seen, read, or even used some of these new things lately, I thought it might be good to share a few of them on a regular basis here on the blog. Read more…

9/11

Posted in: Heroes, History, Life | Posted by: rcornish | Comments: 1 | Date: 12 September, 2008

911I am not sure how many other people are blogging about this, I am sure it numbers up there for subjects today. I am sitting and left just amazed that it has been seven years since the event. I recall the morning it happened. I was still in Virginia at the VaTech - which I still think should be called VPI personally. First heard of things happening as I was getting my coffee that morning and doing my usual checks of the news. It was numbness that we all tried to keep with things that were happening that morning, especially as the demands on the internet were pushed the limits. The deadlines Read more…
