More Observations

Black FridayYou all (Old English terminology there) seemed to like it the last time I did one of these lists of things I have observed over the last week or so, or at least those of you who commented both here and on some of the social networks seemed to indicate as much in your raving positive response.  To that end, I have indeed decided to make it a regular feature here and while at current time I am not willing to commit to an exact time frame, I am thinking more along the lines of about once a week or maybe sometimes if there is not much happening it will stretch to two.  I am concerned though, what will I will use for an opening paragraph next time?  Oh well, I have a week or so to figure that one out, lets get started…

  • First and foremost, this is officially the thirtieth post in thirty days.  Yeah for me.  I will ad that while intended to do that on two other blogs, it did not happen.  I do have a different kind of plan coming to a blog near you very soon.  But, as I have more then enough to post about I am going to try and keep the streak running through December with thirty one posts through the month of thirty one days.
  • Is Black Friday called such because all the retail stores are operating in the red until that day in the year and that is when they usually get it turned around?   I got that as an answer when I suggested it was because of the black moods that so many shoppers had on the day.  I found that a little odd and had to do a little research on my own, especially given that I know in the 19th century it referred to a bad financial crash.  Turns out the modern usage first cited is in 1965, Philadelphia police were referring the heavy traffic around the city for the day of shopping after Thanksgiving.  This continued through the 1970’s, mostly with cab and bus drivers in the fair city of brotherly love.   In the 1980’s merchants, concerned about the negative image that the Black Friday term gave to the big shopping day starting the getting into black rhetoric trying to give a more positive spin.
  • After my time spent in a coffee shop on a shared wireless connection where the *(&%  *(*&&^&*^%  *($#% sitting next to me was streaming a movie, in a full screen and maybe HD format, I am firmly of the opinion there should be a special front row bench for such offenders in whatever your version of hell is.
  • If you are not into black Friday, maybe cyber Monday is more you thing.  And no, I am not talking about cyber sex, but rather cyber deals.  One that I am considering myself is a 22″ monitor at $109.99 shipped, offered from Staples.  Of course, I just looked and it is listed as out of stock.  Story of my life today.
  • Wildcats football team, despite all they have managed this year, could not get past TN Saturday night.  They had it in the bag first half and even given back to them late in the 4th by TN, and still managed to loose straight in OT heading the wrong direction on the field.  Oh well, there is a awesome UK team playing Friday at midnight at the Ice Center – Check out the UK Hockey team and see the coolest team in Lexington!  In the new rankings we are #4 vs #1, instead of the #2 and #3 it looked to have been.
  • I want  an amendment to my Christmas Wish list a few post back.  I asked for a bigger pony, well, I have a specific one in mind now if you are reading this blog Santa (and of course you are, all the cool people do).  Check out this big hefty draft x thoroughbred cross.   In case if Santa is not reading, I am willing to take donations!
  • Anyone out there going to the SCA event called Christmas Tourney here in the Midrealm next weekend?  Just curious as to who may be there that I know – planning to be there and fight, not sure about feast as I am heading down alone I think and that is not so cool for feast.
  • Being a clear fan of red heads, did anyone see the news last week about the Kick a Ginger attack?   I have heard several accounts and apparently it was a bit widespread and related to a SouthPark episode (which is exactly the show I would want my kids imitating).  The general idea, pick someone with that general red hair, fair complexion, and probably freckled too and just assault them because you can.  What kind of morons are out there in the world?
  • Anyone else there giving Bing a try as a search engine?  It has all that google offers, perhaps a bit smarter in some suggestions, and really cool features.  Like a list of images shows twenty and instead of clicking next it automagically loads the next twenty with a mouse scroll.  Plus I admit, I have liked the unobtrusive variety of pictures with the hidden scroll overs with extra information.  If I am not careful I can get into a information seeking loop like I do on occasion with Wikipedia on those.
