You all (Old English terminology there) seemed to like it the last time I did one of these lists of things I have observed over the last week or so, or at least those of you who commented both here and on some of the social networks seemed to indicate as much in your raving positive response. To that end, I have indeed decided to make it a regular feature here and while at current time I am not willing to commit to an exact time frame, I am thinking more along the lines of about once a week or maybe sometimes if there is not much happening it will stretch to two. I am concerned though, what will I will use for an opening paragraph next time? Oh well, I have a week or so to figure that one out, lets get started…
A few weeks ago I drove up to the Northern Kentucky area and met a friend. From there we headed a bit further north into the big metropolitan area of Cincinnati with the intent of spending the afternoon viewing the various galleries at the Cincinnati Art Museum. It is an afternoon well spent if you have any inclination or appreciation of art and the collection has just a little bit of everything so regardless of your personal taste you are sure to find something that you appreciate.
Old Dogs is the name of the recently movie by Robin Williams and John Travolta. I admit that I may have gotten a bit sucked in on the hype with this one and I definitely saw it completely by chance at the time, as Thanksgiving evening late I was just bored and I did not want to wait the extra forty minutes for anything else. I have heard a few people having good things to say about it, but my general feeling is at best a sophomore effort, which is just way sub-par for veteran talent like Williams and Travolta.
I just have had one of the oddest days today and thought I would share a bit about it in pretty much the order that things happened. Most of it summed up to not a really good day, but a couple of things did have a positive moment or two in there. The day began with getting going a bit good deal before 7:00am on what was being a day off for me…
Okay… I am fully aware that I should be making a list of things that I am thankful for and may be I will do that on the morrow, who knows. But one my fondest childhood memories was me and my brother going through the Sears and Roebuck catalog drawing circles around the items that we were wanting for Christmas. Mostly, as kids we were of coursed focused on toys, but I can recall sometime in there that I thought having the model in a particular clothing department would have been a good present too… Anyway, partly as comic relieve and partly being as real as it gets here is my wish list for Santa for 2009 Christmas eve delivery…. I will begin with I probably knew better from the get go, but I was lured in all the same. After all when I read the message of a fourteen day free trial with no obligations and thirty six credits it sounded pretty good. I was, after all, in the market for a few songs here and there that I was wanting to get, just the single song, without purchase of an album of what have you. Besides the small print clearly stated, no charge would be made so long as the account was canceled during the fourteen day trial period.
The Origins of Species
On this date one hundred and fifty years ago the book, On the Origin of Species was published. Written of course by that sometime honored and other times maligned person by the name of Charles Darwin. The issues that came forth from the work clearly created division at that time and certainly continue today, perhaps even more so. Given this nice round date and some of the scientific based analysis that came from that publication I thought a short blog was in order.
GPS vs Smartphones
Anyone asking for GPS for Christmas this year? If you are I would ask you think twice about it and probably check it off your list. Consider this for just a second, most smart phones and even more then a few phones from the generation before, have a built in GPS navigation system of some sort of another. Take it a step further when you consider the GPS is a basically a single (or perhaps double) function device for at least $100 if not closer to $150 or more.
Blind Side
Went with some friends to see this movie on the opening weekend. Actually had to go twice, as the first attempt on Friday evening was sold out – much to my surprise (and here I thought all the hype was New Moon but the theater was full for Blind Side). That all aside, the movie is based on the true life story of Micheal Oher and his adoptive family the Tuohy’s of Memphis, Tennessee. I admit I did not realize that it based on a true story and was initially interested in seeing the film because of Sandra Bullock.
A few weeks ago I posted a rather bit of a rant on one of my other blogs about how the History Channel really had little to offer any more in the regards of actual history. You can read that over on Eligius and specifically at the post NOT-History Channel. Anyway, the point is I have rediscovered an old friend in PBS. I used to be a PBS junkie prior to the explosion of things like Discovery and History channels on cable/satellite networks. My recent reentry into the PBS world with the National Parks has had me making a much greater effort at what is available.
