Scruffy = Green
I was thinking it had been awhile since I had written anything about being eco-friendly and going green. It has not been because I have not thought about some things and even given some of them a lot of deep thought. I have always had this debate in my head about disposable razors versus the more expensive but more optioned disposable blades. A little background is in order there I think for those may not know me well.
Ever since my college days I have had a beard of some sort of another, excepting about one week during which time I got married – that made two mistakes that week. The largest part of the reason has always been that I just hate to shave. I know, women have it two or three or perhaps even more times worse in that regard. What can I say though, I am just pathetic on that front. Regardless though, even with a full beard there are still places that have to be trimmed up with something. In more recent years, I have switched to a goatee, which of course has required even more trimming.
So my debate about the disposable razors runs something like this. They are a full razor, you use them maybe a couple of times on my beard and they are done. Toss them out and get another one. Seems very wasteful and definitely not very green. The other side of that is buying the more expensive razors with blades that change out. But most of those have several blades and are tricked out with all sorts of stuff to the point that I am not sure if it is really more green.
Simple solution, which I have been practicing mostly anyway without realizing how effective it was. I have a small electric trimmer that I run over the not goatee parts leaving a Don Johnson scruff look – and that is only about every third or fourth day. I no longer, excepting very special occasions, worry about a razor at all. I do sacrifice that close shave, but now I am a lot happier about that thought with the realization I am doing a good thing by doing so.
I am sure there are plenty of you out there going it is just a razor. What is the big deal? Or maybe, your just thinking that I really need to lighten up? My comment back to that is the number of razors over a year for one person such as much is quite a staggering number if I shaved on a daily basis. Multiply that by just a few guys buzzing close intsead of using that tossed razor and you begin to see my point. If you have to have the shave maybe straight razor is the way to go – for information and to realize I am not the only person considering such things click here.
Another thing I have read about of late in the eco-green world is the high cost (ecologically speaking) of making the latest fashion trends in blue jeans. This one is not a problem for me either as a general rule. I do have a couple of pair, that I even get into a habit of wearing on occasion. On the other hand though, I much prefer a lighter, much less fashionable cotton pair of pants. Beyond that, the jeans that I do have were bought as your basic regular jeans. I get the fashion look from wearing them soon enough.
This brings me to the one issue I am struggling with right now. I have this great, fairly efficient little car. However, it is not suiting my needs – especially since I got rid of the truck that was causing me such grief. I have been looking at a mid size truck instead of a large one to go to for the time being. I do not see a practical way of doing short of trading the car in on the truck though. The truck is going to be higher gas mileage obviously. I think though, that my life generally dictates having a truck. I guess I am going to have make up a lot more then the razors in the great picture if I end up going this route. Thoughts?

Ray-
I get the razor thing – and as a woman… I try to use as few as possible and even have an electric – I prefer on my hubby the scruffy look anyway…
On the jeans… I guess I didn’t realize they weren’t eco friendly… but then again – 80% of my time is in scrubs…
On the truck – I have been in both places…
Wanted a truck – but didn’t need it – I was 18 and bought a little Ranger… Gas mileage ok – but who cared when gas was $1.50 per gallon? But I didn’t NEED the truck and so relized that it didn’t work…
NOW – we just bought G an F150 w/ cap (which does btw reduce gas guzzeling) and since we have a lifestyle that REQUIRES/NEEDS a truck from time to time – I can’t beleive we managed to get along with out it!!

You could always pluck….or wax….:0
Apparently, in period, they used some kind of spice/lime paste…..Throw in a little tequila, and you could have TONS of fun depilatoring…depilatorating….aw, heck. Getting unfuzzy.
My Saturn VUE gets 25 mpg (highway) and now comes in a hybrid…and I can get everything I need into it for two weeks at Pennsic – she has a surprising amount of room….heck, I’ve slept in the back on a queen size air matress comfortably.

Laura: You are welcome, glad you like my little piece of the internet. Jeans was not something I had really thought about but the razors for sure. The truck, I can be consoled if I do it with knowing it is smaller then the truck I have historically had and hence less gas and emissions just a few years ago.
Jane: You little Vue would fall over panting the first time I hitched a trailer to it, much less two horses. If just going to events was the thing, I could be somewhat happy in the car. I really want a little four cylinder truck and a big full ton crew cab truck for hauling, but with disaster this spring/summer of the truck I bought that is no longer in the cards.
