Scruffy = Green

Disposable RazorI was thinking it had been awhile since I had written anything about being eco-friendly and going green. It has not been because I have not thought about some things and even given some of them a lot of deep thought. I have always had this debate in my head about disposable razors versus the more expensive but more optioned disposable blades.  A little background is in order there I think for those may not know me well.

Cool Tools

LeathermanAs is usual for me on occasion, I have been doing some house cleaning on the blog plugins and a few other things.  I started some of this back before my laptop got stolen and so I am not completely sure what has been reported on what has not.  Most of the things below are regarding new blog plugins and a few updated notes on some older ones.  There are a couple of non-blog tools included as well.  All are open source and free to download and install, which was a guiding force as much as possible when I put things back together on my new laptop.  And you know this is going to be a list… ;)

Medieval Bling

Dover CastleYes, I said medieval bling.  Yes,  I am sure that is exactly what I meant.   No, the medieval world was not some gray drab world that lacked color.  It does not take a super amount of intelligence to figure this all out if you give it just a little bit of of thought.  After all, when was it that the process of making those elaborate and oh so beautiful designs out of stained glass came to be?

Bad Language

Bad LanguageTwo thoughts for the price of one blog.  First is the horrid use of the English language in some of my previous posts here on Mephistos, which includes half thoughts, typographical errors, outright misspellings, a few confused words and more. It really is ugly. The second has more to do with the bad language, or, ahem, naughty words, that I am sure a few of you were thinking when you read the title of the blog upon your arrived.  More about that one here in a bit.

August

Frank DefordThis morning as I headed into work, I was listening to NPR of course.  It was an usually early hour for me to be heading that direction, but I had a computer drive issue that I needed to check out.  During that brief commute, I heard another favorite of mine this morning waxing on about the waning status of August as that do nothing month.  While I did indeed enjoy Frank Deford’s description of August having historically marked the end of summer as it slipped into fall and a time of really nothing – I personally think it lends to his having led a sheltered life or at least an urban life.

Long of It

In BetweenFolks I am reaching that critical point of is it time to cut my hair and keep it short (again) or go ahead and let it grow out long.  I have pretty much reached the decision in the matter, but I thought for fun (and to give me an excuse to check outsome polling plugins) I would throw it out here and let all my fine cyber friends have some input.  So here goes nothing or maybe I should say here goes something.  Check out the poll over the to the right (that is this side —>) and let me know. By the way, I am as curious as to your thoughts as I am to how the polling plugin option works… Thanks!

Browser Wars – III?

Posted in: Blogging, Frustrations, Technology | Posted by: rcornish | Comments: 2 | Date: 12 August, 2009

Browser BattlesI had posted about the heating up browswer wars and the possible inovations and definite frustrations that would accompany that back a few months ago.  I am here  to say it continues and my frustration level with it is reaching an all time new high given the minium inovation that seems to be coming from it so far.  Mostly it seems like every week or I am upgraded or re-installing one browswer or another and currently <GASP> I seem to be left with Internet Explorer from Microsoft being the most dependable, stable, and overall realiable for me.

Mad Hatter

Mad HatterA thought I have had the last few days and that in a lot of ways ties back to last week while I was at Pennsic is about hats.   I found this particularly true last Friday and again this eve, both times when I put on a hat while doing something so I could leave off the sun glasses.  A little background is in order first I suppose – for most of my adult life I have not been one to wear sunglasses so much.  On the occasion when I have done so I usually go for the cheap ones as it would not do for me to sit on, crunch, or otherwise just loose a more expensive pair.

Back to Reality

Posted in: Frustrations, Life, Medieval, Movies | Posted by: rcornish | Comments: 0 | Date: 09 August, 2009

Midrealm ArmyLast week I was in the middle of approximately eleven thousand people, mostly encamped in a semi medieval fashion and having a good battle of several thousand people every day.  Today I am back to reality for my third day and reality really set in with a vengance.  Now before I go to far with that I would like to step back a bit to last week.  It was truly awesome and I plan to post at least once for each day going back to last week.  Some may recall I thought of maybe posting while I was there, but honestly, aside from checking those work systems that I had too I stayed away from the computer during my medieval escape.
