So I am currently catching up on a show that a couple of friends of mine put me onto back a bit ago, called The Big Bang Theory. The basic premise of the show is there are four fairly geeky guy ranging from the pure scientist to the engineer, each with their own unique personalities. While the most geeky of all seems to not care, the other three are at times (in between debated theories, huge discussions of the perfect ethnic food, and the required playing of many and varied video/computer games) often engaged in one scheme or another to become more mainstream and socially accepted, especially in regards to matters of the heart or least the casual affections of a female companion.
The show itself is a very funny. It does have a pretty good amount of humor that I suspect is lost on some folks, especially the really geeky stuff where the funny part is in the deep aspect of some odd theory of some sort or another. I am guessing that on occasion a few things even go over my head. It is okay though, as there is also plenty of humor otherwise and there are somethings in the show that are just funny no matter who you are. I am reminded for instance a few episodes back when they went to a Ren Faire and the alpha geek was pointed out all the things that were not correct for the period while wearing a Spock set of garb.
All of this is background though to the geeky synchronicity. Only this past week I had a conversation with one of the friends who introduced me to the show. During that conversation, for a very brief moment the thought of comic books came up and particularly (though at the time I do not recall the reason) how what one really believes in is subject to change depending on the situation or something like that. Now that I think on it, maybe it was just the frustration that I see with the different timelines and “realities” in comic books on occasion.
Again, kind of background information and perhaps a distraction. However, during the conversation I mentioned that I had been a huge fan of Green Arrow, especially during the Longbow Hunters era and even on up through the time until the end of the “Zero Hour” series that crossed over to about 30-40 different titles. During that series, Green Arrow, in all of human non-super hero state, makes the ultimate sacrifice being unwilling to give him his hands which would have saved his life but left him unable to shoot a bow.
Long way to get there, but here it is a mere two days after and I watch the DVR version of the show from a few weeks ago and when they are in a comic book store I am thinking how me that is almost in some ways from ten to twenty years ago. And out of no where, the “Zero Hour” is mentioned not just once, but twice in the show.
Pure Geeky Synchronicity.
