I have a hundred things to write about for the blog most likely. That is a educated guess of course, but there at least fifty drafts of posts that are in progress or a reminder note. And as if that were not enough, just about everything that I have come across the last twenty-four hours seems to have suggested another post. Some of them, however, are just not enough to make a full post on its on merits, so a collection if you well. Some of these by be revisited in the future though.
As promised the other day (and ironically actually something I started a LONG time before the other day), I wanted to mention some details about the horses that I am thinking have the best run at the 135th running of the Kentucky. Yes folks, it is definitely getting to be that time and I certainly start getting excited about it right about now. Horses have done there two year campaigns, if you agree with that or not and now they are hitting their potential prime on the race track and there is one race that stands out today more then other and that is the Run for the Roses that takes place always on the first Saturday in May.
First, yes, I have sucked the last few days on keeping my posts going for the month. Just got busy and absorbed. But now for something completely different. The Run for the Roses is just a little over two months away and I like to get excited about that. I played this fantasy stable thing last year that was a blast and there can be some real prize money. Oh and just so you my two leading favorites are Old Fashion and Stardom Bound, but there will be another post soon about those.
Great movie that I got to see yesterday. It is getting near the end of its run, but is still playing locally at the Kentucky this week and perhaps elsewhere. Slumdog Millionaire was made in India and set in India. It has a little bit of a different feel then a typical Hollywood flick of the same style and probably hints back a bit to an older age of Hollywood in some ways. Everyone in it is Indian as far as I know and I have no idea of any are stars or not. Regardless, well worth cost of admission if you get a chance.
Something that I realized today while have lunch. It used to be that if you were dining out you could have a coffee or fountain beverage for a good deal cheaper then you could have a beer to accompany that meal. These days however, that is starting to go the other direction. Much to my dismay it is not because beer is getting cheaper, but that beverages are just going through the roof from a pricing perspective. Anyway – some hero’s – anyone involved in keeping beer prices less then even water, much less soda-pops.
Earlier today I went to church, not for church services though mind you. In actual fact I met a few good friends and few probably hundred others or so for some good tournament sword fighting, medieval recreational style. The event is called Candlemas, has been going on for a long time, is hosted here in Lexington and is known for two things historically: great fighting and great feasting. It was not a disappointment on either account today.
Hops & Trace Routes…
It seems that I have had a lot to say about technology of late and I do apologize if that is not your thing. However, it has been on my mind a lot of late and especially with the recent ice storms and power outages here in central Kentucky I have all but lived and ate technology and reworking things to get by during the short term and looking for long term solutions to avoid issues in the future. With most of that getting behind us I was looking forward to some relaxation this weekend only to have my shared server space to become unavailable on Friday – which is hosted in sunny California. All of this living without the ready access of connectivity to friends and information has kind made me take a look at how dependent, almost like a drug, I am on the stuff and it has so fragile a supply.
Those regular readers will recall that a few weeks ago I first said ping.fm in conjunction with a plug in called pingpress.fm was a great way to push your content out to different social network and such as that. Shortly after that, I recanted, largely over the lack of controls and nice formating in the pingpress.fm. It was also problematic with picking up a ping and repeated it a second and third time. At the time I mentioned that I had a good replacement that was generally even better – Share This.
I think I have fallen into the technology pit. I see happen all the time, especially with computers and to a lesser extent things like cameras, printers, and probably cell phones. We get up sold on features that we really do not need, desire, and a lot of cases, never use. I do not know the number of laptops I see that are ramped up technology over filled boats that weigh in closer to 10 lbs, have features out the yin-yang, and only end be used to browse the web, a little word processing, and once a blue moon a spread-sheet. After all, who really needs WAN cell based modems, 7200 RPM drives, Core-Duo based lightning fast chips, along with blue tooth in a laptop? Okay, okay… I did just order one, but then again I am the IT guy and will actually use all that to a full extent.
A quick little post. I am sure that many of you are in the same boat as I am and you have watched over the last roughly eight to ten months as your 401K has lost an average of 30% of its value. Or in another way of thinking as the one one 401K is relatively new, I have had a net gain of 0% despite a pretty decent amount going into the 401K along with a healthy company match. As you are seeing the decline of your holdings, you are thinking that the stock market is the absolute last place to be putting any additional moneys at this point. I think that is the wrong move at this point, and I am even thankful as a investing for the opportunity to purchase some additional stocks at bargain bin pricing.
